10-3-11 News

Another year has gone by and the results are in regarding campus safety. On Friday, the annual safety and crime report from the office of student life was released detailing reports of alcohol-related arrests and more.

The report says in 2010 there were approximately 363 liquor law violations on campus in residential facilities.
The report lists 25 burglaries on campus from the same year as well as six forcible sexual offenses. There were also zero recorded hate crimes on campus listed in the report.

Future crime fighters and the public are invited to two free presentations by representatives from federal law enforcement agencies at Kansas State University in October.

K-state's Criminology Club is sponsoring discussions by Brooke Burger, a U.S. Border Patrol agent based in Topeka, tomorrow and by Kristopher Lewiston, an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Topeka office, on Thursday, Oct. 20. Both presentations start at 7 p.m. in the K-state Student Union's Little Theater.

LOCAL NEWS

-An entire floor of Hale Library will be closed for the next two weeks. Beginning today through Monday, August 15th, crews will be repairing items as well as laying new carpet. Library staff with offices on the floor will be able to reach them if they contact the help desk for the best route. For more information, you can contact 785-532-2535.

-The results are in on the Battle of the Badges for Manhattan. KMAN reports, The Riley County Police Department has come out victorious with 106 donations to the Red Cross. Riley County EMS came in second with 98, and Manhattan Fire Department had 68.

STATE NEWS

-For the ninth year in a row, a team of Fort Riley soldiers has placed in the top three at a national competition testing close-combat fighting skills.

The Fort Riley team finished second in the recent U.S. Army Combatives Championship at Fort Hood, Texas. Hundreds of soldiers took part in the event, which puts competitors through a variety of one-on-one bouts.

Two members of the Fort Riley team placed first in their weight categories. Capt. Brandon Bear won the 180-pound category, while Spc. Joseph Sundstrom won the 140-pound category.

The entire team was honored at a ceremony Friday at the 1st Infantry Division Headquarters at Fort Riley.

NATIONAL NEWS

-President Obama and congressional leaders on Sunday worked out a deal to avoid the first ever U.S. default that could have come as soon as this week.

The deal would cut trillions of dollars in government spending over the next 10 years and raise the amount of money the U.S. is legally allowed to borrow by enough to avoid another showdown on the matter before next year's presidential election. It also would create a new congressional committee to recommend a deficit-reducing proposal by Thanksgiving and would require a vote on the plan by Christmas.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

-Transformers: Dark of the Moon's two-week head start couldn't hold off Harry Potter's record-breaking pace as the Deathly Hallows Part 2 passed $1 billion worldwide on Sunday, while Transformers still has a few days left before it arrives at that coveted milestone. Now ranking eighth on the all-time world record chart, Part 2 opens up in China this coming weekend.

SPORTS

-Rising junior Rodney McGruder has been selected to participate with the East Coast All-Stars in the Four Nations Cup held in Tallinn, Estonia starting tomorrow through next Monday.

A third team All-Big 12 selection last season, McGruder will join nine other collegiate players, as they spend seven days in the small Northern European country of Estonia, which is bordered on the east by Russia and on the west by the Baltic Sea and on the south by Latvia.

The East Coast All-Stars will be joined in the Four Nations Cup by host Estonia, along with national teams from Sweden and Georgia.

LOCAL NEWS

The public is invited to attend a student poster session on campus will take place next week. The Research Experience for Undergraduates Summer Academy in Sustainable Bioenergy will host the session as the conclusion of the summer program and will feature bioenergy research.

A Manhattan area rancher is one of 16 people named to the Governor’s new Council of Economic Advisers. KMAN reports Jan Lyons has been involved with the National Cattelman’s Beef Association and is looking forward to the challenge.

Lyons part of a family operation raising Angus Cattle in the Flint Hills of Kansas on McDowell Creek Road and at another ranch near Alta Vista. The new council will be asked to coordinate strategic planning and economic development. It also is expected to evaluate state policies and agency performance as well as conduct research on topics such as tax competitiveness and regulations.

STATE NEWS

The Kansas Highway Patrol has reopened eastbound Interstate 70 west of Topeka following a long standoff with a man barricaded inside a recreational vehicle. The 25-mile stretch was closed in both directions a little after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Eastbound lanes were opened shortly after the man was taken into custody around 3:30 p.m. Officials expected to open westbound lines quickly. The patrol had closed the highway to protect motorists in case of gunfire. No details about the man were immediately released.

NATIONAL NEWS

Early Wednesday morning, 71-year-old Alex Trebek and his wife were sleeping in a San Francisco hotel when an intruder broke into their room, grabbing money and valuables. Trebek proceeded to chase the burglar down the hall, but was unsuccessful to catch the suspect, rupturing his Achilles tendon in the process.

The suspect, 56-year-old Lucinda Moyers was later arrested and charged with felony burglary and receiving stolen property.

SPORTS

Three former Wildcats signed free agent contracts with NFL teams yesterday. Long snapper Corey Adams agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys, Defensive back Stephen Harrison signed with the San Diego Chargers, and one of 2010’s top kick returners William Powell signed with the San Francisco 49ers. The NFL season begins on September 8th.

--Kansas State’s next Landon lecture series speaker was announced this past weekend. Former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson will speak October 26th at McCain Auditorium. The Wednesday morning event at 10:30 is free and open to the public.

Simpson speaks across the country on current events, the nation’s economic future, and role of congress in society. He’s well-known for his 1997 book “right in the Old Gazoo: a lifetime of scrapping with the Press.”

Simpson served in the Wyoming legislature for 13 years, later becoming governor and a three term U.S. Senator. After retiring from the senate in 1996 he joined Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of government, where he was a visiting lecturer and director of the Institute of Politics.

--A 50-year-old Arkansas man was arrested after a hazardous material incident in which he was involved led to a 25-mile stretch of Interstate 70 being closed until 10:30 p.m. Monday, said Junction City Police Chief Tim Brown.
Christopher Spence, 50, of Conway, Ark., allegedly called the Junction City/Geary Dispatch Center at 10:32 a.m. Monday and advised that a hazardous material had been placed in Room 123 of the Junction City Ramada Inn, 1133 S. Washington.

As of Monday night, police weren’t identifying the hazardous material.
An FBI spokeswoman said late Monday that preliminary tests found no explosive threat or suspicious content inside the truck.
This led to the reopening of the hotel at 4:30pm and I-70 six hours later.

Reports from Junction City Police say the investigation remains ongoing.

--Kansas is promoting its redesigned government website as “fresher-looking” and easier to navigate.

The home page www.kansas.gov links visitors not only to state officials and agency sites but to their social media sites and blogs.
A new mapping feature is designed to help people find state government offices, as well as colleges, parks, libraries and lakes.

--Rival Democratic and Republican plans to raise the government's borrowing ability have thrust Congress into a standoff just one week away from a potentially devastating debt crisis.

While addressing the nation Monday night, President Obama says that we can’t allow the American people to become collateral damage to Washington's political warfare.
CBS News reports that with an August 2nd deadline rapidly closing, Congress and the White House have limited options to avoid a potential government default that could send the already weak economy into a damaging swoon.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

--The results of singer Amy Winehouse’s autopsy signifies no determined cause of death. People Magazine reports that Toxicology tests will be performed and will results in a matter of two to four weeks.

SPORTS

--The Royals finished a lengthy ball game early this morning against the Boston Red Sox. After being delayed 2 hours and 21 minutes past the original start time due to rain, the two teams began playing the game at 8:30 Central Time.
After giving up a run in the second the Royals answer late in the game to force extra innings. After playing five extra sets the Royals came out victorious 3-1.
Starting Pitcher Kyle Davies continues to improve his game, throwing for seven innings giving up six hits on just one earned run and six strikeouts.
The two met again tonight at Fenway Park, first pitch at 6:10pm.

LOCAL NEWS

Looking for an opportunity to help others? Volunteers are still needed for the Kansas State University Blood Drive. Those who volunteer will be needed from 8am to 5pm on Wednesday in the Student Union. The drive is sponsored by the American Red Cross and more information about the drive you can contact Kristi Ingalls at 785-456-9773.

Due to the Wildcat Creek flooding earlier this summer, a task force has been put together to address the issue. A total of 17 members from the city, county, and state are contributing efforts to prevent future flooding in the area. KMAN reports that the group wants to manage the area and prevent the flooding without doing serious damage to the creek and other tributaries.

The group will meet this week and present information and other visual aids that will allow them to study the affected area.

STATE NEWS

A Kansas nurse who diluted morphine-based solutions at a Halstead nursing home is expected to be in federal court for sentencing.

Deborah Riggs, of Goddard, pleaded guilty in December to one count each of consumer product tampering and adulteration of a drug. She is scheduled to be sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson.

Riggs was accused of diluting the morphine solutions intended for five patients at the Halstead Health and Rehabilitation Center. The nursing home told The Associated Press last year that no patients actually received the diluted medicine, which was taken from a seldom-used overflow area.

A near drowning led to the early closure of a public swimming pool in Hutchinson on Saturday. The Hutchinson News reported that a 2-year-old boy was found unconscious Saturday in a 3-foot-deep area at the Salt City Splash Aquatic Center.

A lifeguard and manager worked to resuscitate the boy until emergency workers arrived.
The boy ultimately regained consciousness and was taken to Promise Regional Medical Center where he was in stable condition Saturday night.

NATIONAL NEWS

The teenage outdoor education students, having progressed to the point of being on their own in the vast Alaska wilderness, were lined up single file for a river crossing when the grizzly burst with fury into the front of the line, badly mauling two in the group and injuring two more.

Hospital spokeswoman Crystal Bailey said the two mauled teens are listed in serious condition after troopers earlier said the injuries were life-threatening.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home.
Police confirmed that the 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at her home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene.

SPORTS

The Sunflower Showdown will once again be on national display this winter, as the Big 12 Conference and ESPN announced pairings for its Big Monday men's basketball telecasts on Thursday.

The Showdown, which is presented by Dillons, will be played at Bramlage Coliseum on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012 at 8 p.m. CST. It will mark the second consecutive season that the Manhattan portion of rivalry will be broadcast on ESPN's Big Monday telecast, while it will be the third year in a row that ESPN has broadcast the game to a national audience.

The Royals broke their four game winning streak yesterday, falling to the Tampa Bay Rays 5-0. Rays starting pitcher Alex Cobb threw for seven innings striking out two on six hits. The Royals left eight runners on base through the game with six of those being in scoring position. Kansas City heads to Boston tonight for four game series, first pitch at 6:10.

LOCAL NEWS

The next phase of a plan to remove a former chemical waste landfill is under way. The former chemical waste landfill North of K-State's Bill Snyder Family Stadium, is where university chemical waste was disposed of in the 1960s and 1970s.
This removal project began in January with the installation of a groundwater treatment system to collect any contaminated water and pump into the treatment system for cleaning.
University environmental officials say they will now begin the waste characterization phase. This phase will consist of opening four separate investigative trenches to better understand what is buried at the site.

Today at the Riley County Fairgrounds a couple food exhibits will take place at three o’clock. Entrants in the Open Class and 4-H Food Preservation exhibits will have their items judged at Pottorf Hall. Along with contest, the 4-H items will be sold this evening from 4pm – 7pm and will open back up tomorrow morning. For more information on the fair you can go to Riley County Fair.com.

Harper County authorities today destroyed an estimated 4,000 marijuana plans that were discovered growing near the Chikaskia River.
KWCH in Wichita says officials found the marijuana while following up on a tip from a Danville resident. Officials estimated the marijuana was worth about $4 million.

Kansas wildlife officials say they caught a flathead catfish weighing at least 80 pounds last week while measuring and weighing fish.

Craig Johnson, the lake's fisheries biologist, says the flathead was caught Friday while he and others were electro-fishing at the lake. They send jolts of electricity into the water to stun blue catfish, which are weighed and then released back into the water. The shocking boat was in water about 30 feet deep over the old Walnut River channel when the flathead floated to the surface. The fish was later released.

American Airlines is buying at least 460 new planes over the next five years and splitting the order between aerospace giants Boeing and Airbus. The airline expects the new, better-mileage planes will save money on fuel and provide more enticing amenities to passengers.

David and Victoria Beckham's newborn daughter, Harper Seven Beckham, is already setting trends - and she's not even two weeks old.
Sales of Harper Lee's classic novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" reportedly soared after it was revealed that the Beckhams named their daughter after the author.

Britain's Daily Mail reports that sales of the book - which was first published in 1960 - went up 123 percent on the U.K.'s Amazon website after David mentioned the inspiration behind the baby girl's name.

Kansas State sophomore running back Bryce Brown was named to the 2011 Preseason All-Big 12 team after a vote of various media members who cover the league, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Brown is the second-straight Wildcat running back to be named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team, as Daniel Thomas was honored prior to the 2010 season. A native of Wichita, Kan., Brown sat out the 2010 season after transferring from Tennessee. In 12 games for the Volunteers in 2009, Brown rushed 101 times for 460 yards and three touchdowns. Brown will see his first game action with K-State on September 3rd.

Kansas State University officials say the struggling economy has not hurt gifts to the school’s foundation. The university said in a news release Monday that it received a record $107 million in contributions to the KSU Foundation in the last fiscal year. More than 44,500 alumni and others contributed during the last fiscal year.
Of the $107 million, $67 million was in cash, real estate or appreciated securities.

The other $40 million was pledges and deferred gifts, which the university will receive at a later date.
The university received four gifts of $5 million or more and nine gifts between $1 million and $5 million.


The Alpha Delta Xi sorority house has been vandalized.

KMAN reports sometime between the 25th of May and the 16th of June a unknown suspect shot out 15 windows at the sorority, and heavily damaged the front door. The suspected weapon is a BB gun.
The total dollar loss is estimated to be around 22-hundred dollars, with Riley County Police still investigating the crime.

Eleven Army medical teams are competing at Fort Riley for the
right to be called the best of the best.

The competition at the northeast Kansas post began Monday.
Teams went through a medical simulation training center where
they had to treat lifelike mannequins for combat injuries on a
realistic battlefield.
Today's events included a confidence course, with teams
navigating 10 obstacles including scaling a high wall.

A coroner said a southern Kansas man who was found dead while riding his bicycle died with heat as a factor. Dr. Lacie Gregory said 47-year-old Larry Godfrey's death will be considered a natural death. He was diabetic and was on medication, which led to cardiovascular collapse. But Gregory told The Winfield Courier that heat was a factor in Godfrey's death.

The Sumner County Sheriff's Department said Godfrey's body was found on Saturday near Oxford, lying near his bicycle.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating an air traffic controller for allegedly working while drunk at an air traffic center in Longmont, Colorado, an FAA official confirms to CBS News.

The unidentified controller, reportedly a veteran and former union rep, was allegedly six hours into his shift July 5 when a random drug and alcohol test administered onsite showed his blood alcohol level in excess of the legal limit for ATC employees on the job, which is .04, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr.

There will be no storybook ending for Borders. The 40-year-old book seller could start liquidating its 399 remaining stores as early as Friday.

The Ann Arbor, Michigan-based chain, which helped pioneer the big-box bookseller concept, is seeking court approval to liquidate after it failed to receive any bids that would keep it in business. The move adds Borders to the list of retailers that have failed to adapt to changing consumers' shopping habits and survive the economic downturn, including Circuit City Stores Inc., Blockbuster and Linens N’ Things.

SPORTS

Frank Myers Field at Tointon Family Stadium will undergo a facelift beginning this week with the installation of the AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D60 infill system.

The new infill turf will be installed over the entire field, replacing not only the artificial infield and warning track areas that were constructed in 2006, but the natural grass outfield and bullpen areas, as well. The field art will have a Powercat behind home plate with a large “KS” featured in center field.

The Royals dropped the first of their three game home series with the White Sox last night, 5-2. Starter Kyle Davies pitched an slightly improved performance giving only two earned runs and sitting down nine batters. The two go at it again tonight at 7:10pm.

A few youth groups are defining the lines of art this summer. Both the Young Artists programs and Young Curators programs are designed to provide real-life museum and art experiences at the Beach Museum of Art. The two will hold an open house on July 30th, featuring works of art inspired by the current works on display at the museum. A rape case that traces back to 1981 concluded on Friday.
Daniel Brewer pleaded no contest to one rape charge, and guilty to another charge of rape on Friday afternoon in Riley County’s District III court. The rape charges were class B felonies with the maximum sentences for 15 to life for both counts, but Brewer changed his pleas in exchange for a plea bargain that releases him under his own recognizance bond until the sentencing date of September 27th. The plea bargain also agrees to a sentence of five years house arrest under the jurisdiction of the State of New York.

Garden City officials are challenging the 2010 census count for their city.
City Planner Sam Henderson said the city has submitted a challenge U.S. Census Bureau. The federal agency said in June that Garden City lost 6.3 percent of its population between 2000 and 2010, dropping from 28,000 to 26,658 residents.
The Garden City Telegram reported that city officials believe the true population is between 28,000 and 30,300. City officials said getting the numbers correct is important because it determines the city's eligibility for federal funds.

A 21-year-old Topeka man has set a strange record.
Justin Werner was notified by the folks at Guiness World Records that the tonsils he had removed in January are the largest in the world.
One of his tonsils was 2.1 inches long, 1.1 inches wide and 0.7 inch thick. The other as 1.9 inches long, 1 inch wide and .7 inch thick. He was notified in June that his tonsils easily beat the previous record held by Justin Dodge of Milwaukee. Werner says he finds the record humorous, but he feels relieved after many years of chronic sore throats and serious snoring problems.

The next step in the weeks-long saga over how to increase the government's borrowing cap is to let House tea party forces try it their way.
CBS News reports a Republican "cut, cap and balance" plan set for a House vote Tuesday would condition a $2.4 trillion increase in the so-called debt limit on an immediate $100 billion-plus cut from next year's budget and adoption by Congress of a constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget.

Harry Potter cruised by the Dark Knight this weekend into first place in the box office record books. The Deathly Hallows Part 2 took in $168.6 million domestically in its first three days, breaking the previous record from 2008’s Batman thriller. Worldwide, the film topped $475 million in a matter of days, putting it on course to become the franchise's first billion-dollar worldwide hit.

The Royals dropped the finale of their four game series in Minnesota on Sunday, 4-3. The boys in blue sink further into last place in the Central Division now 12 games back of the division leading Cleveland Indians. LOCAL NEWS

The attorney for a former Riley County police detective who was fired for alleged misconduct is suing a county board and some former colleagues. Former detective Mark Bylkas is alleging that he was fired, and later falsely accused of a crime, after he reported misconduct of fellow officers.

KMAN reports that the federal lawsuit was filed Thursday against the Riley County Law Board, board director Brad Schoen and three Riley County police officers.

Bylkas was arrested in May 2010 on allegations of official misconduct and theft. He was investigating narcotics when he was suspended before being fired. Riley County officials have not provided many specifics of his alleged crimes.
The case is being handled by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas attorney general's office.

STATE NEWS

A 22-year-old Wichita man with a history of diagnosis and treatment for paranoid schizophrenia will be tried for the February stabbing death of his grandmother. At a hearing Thursday, the public defender for Marrell Tisdale argued for a charge of second-degree murder.

But Sedgwick County District Judge Jeff Syrios ordered Tisdale to be tried for first-degree murder, with the trial tentatively set for Sept. 6. The Wichita Eagle reports that homicide detective Dan Harty testified that Tisdale told police he thought that killing Lott would give him the strength he needed to kill himself, which he had repeatedly attempted since he was a child.

Two people were shot early this morning at an east Wichita night club. Wichita Police say the shooting happened around 1:47 a.m. at Club Rodeo. The victims were taken to a local hospital in critical condition with police still investigating the incident.

NATIONAL NEWS

While many were shocked by Casey Anthony's not guilty verdict in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, some apparently sided with Anthony and have been sending her money in the mail to buy snacks and other items in jail, a report says. CBS News reports Most of the charitable strangers are men, but some women have sent money as well. Due to credit for time served and good behavior, Anthony is scheduled to be released on Sunday.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Harry Potter wasn’t the only new film to be released this weekend. Disney’s Winnie the Pooh makes its debut today. The G-rated movie will have the entire Pooh gang on a quest to find their beloved Christopher Robin. The film features the voices of John Cleese as the narrator and Craig Ferguson as Owl.


SPORTS

The Minnesota Twins used the fifth inning to over power a three run Royals lead last night. Twins DH Trevor Plouffe hit a two run home run after Minnesota already scored two runs in inning. The Twins would take on another four runs to win it, 8-4. The two will meet again tonight at 7:10 as the Royals look to rebound.

A new Kansas State minor is offering major opportunities for engineering students and professionals across the country.
Enabled by the Big 12 Engineering Consortium, students from K-State's College of Engineering, other Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology-accredited institutions and working professionals can expand their knowledge and their employment opportunities through K-State's new minor in nuclear engineering. The minor will be offered to students this fall, courses linked with it will be offered in the classroom as well as online.

The construction of a new exhibit at the Sunset Zoo will begin on Saturday at 10:30am with its ground breaking. The exhibit received funding through a 170-thousand dollar donation from Dr. Richard Woodard in memory of his late son. It has been determined that two Gibbons, members of the lesser ape family will be featured in the new exhibit. Gibbons are typically found in Southeast Asia and with addition to the zoo, Sunset will have a total of 340 animals.

STATE NEWS

Authorities in southeastern Kansas say they confiscated about 3,000 marijuana plants from a large growing operation uncovered earlier this week. A tip led officers to the site near the Greenwood County town of Beaumont.
The marijuana was growing on several properties spread over several miles on both sides of U.S. 400. The Kansas Highway Patrol sent up a helicopter that helped spot pockets of plants from the air. Authorities estimate the value of the plants torn up Tuesday at roughly $3 million.
Police found evidence that workers cultivating the marijuana were living on the site. No arrests have been made, and officials were trying to confirm who owns the land.

Families with children under six who live in Monroeville, Pa. will soon have one less option when they dine out for family night. Mike Vuick, owner of McDain's Restaurant & Golf Center, near Pittsburgh, says he's had too many complaints from customers about crying babies. So he's no longer allowing young children. This has caused a controversy among customers with some people quite offended. The policy will take effect July 16.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

The finale of the Harry Potter film series makes its premiere tonight at midnight to audiences across the nation. For many, The Deathly Hallows Part Two is the most anticipated movie of the summer. The movie series began nearly ten years ago and has produced the most sequels out of any other movie series in its genre.

The Royals return from the All-Star break tonight in Minnesota for a four game series with the 2010 Central Division champs. LOCAL NEWS

A Manhattan High School student has been selected to participate in Kansas State research. Senior Dakie Washington was picked to participate in The American Chemical Society’s Summer Experiences for the Economically Disadvantaged program to study chemical research. The program provides $2,500 fellowships to economically disadvantaged students to participate in summer research at an academic, government or industrial laboratory.

A special legislative committee that will redraw the Kansas House, Senate and congressional maps begins a series of public meetings later this month, including one in Manhattan. Legislators will meet with the public to discuss proposed new boundaries for the state’s 125 House seats, 40 Senate seats and four U.S. House districts. The districts are being redrawn to reflect population changes based on the 2010 Census. The meeting will be on Wednesday July 27th from 3:00 to 5:30pm at Kansas State in room 1107 of Fiedler Hall.

STATE NEWS

The last of four defendants facing judgment in the apparently mistaken killing of a 13-year-old Wichita boy will argue he was nowhere near the scene of the crime. Seventeen-year-old Eddie Laurel is on trial in Sedgwick County District Court, charged as an adult with first-degree murder. Laurel and three others were charged with killing middle school student Miguel Andrade, who was shot 10 times early one morning last summer when he answered a knock at his front door. Earlier witnesses have testified that two of the defendants wanted revenge on a man involved in a fight with their brother, but they fired at the wrong house. The Wichita Eagle reports Laurel's attorney will argue the teen was at a house more than 30 miles away when the killing occurred.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign said Tuesday that he will not sign a conservative Iowa Christian group's far-reaching pledge opposing gay marriage, making him the first Republican presidential candidate to reject it. Two of Romney's rivals for the Republican nomination, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, have signed The Family Leader's 14-point pledge, which calls on the candidates to denounce same-sex marriage rights, pornography, same-sex military accommodations and forms of Islamic law.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Netflix is hiking the minimum price it charges for a combined DVD-by-mail and streaming service to $15.98 from $9.99. The net impact of the change - a 59% increase - will be to force customers to choose between Netflix's unlimited streaming plan and its DVD-by-mail service. Subscribers had previously received a discount for signing up to receive both services.

SPORTS

The Kansas State University Athletic Department announced yesterday that the football team’s opening season games with Eastern Kentucky and Kent State will each kick-off at 6pm. The Cats will open with Eastern Kentucky for the Family Reunion game meanwhile; the Kent State game will include University Family and Band Day.

Last night, the MLB All-Star game took place at Chase Field home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The American League got on the board first with an Adrian Gonzalez home run, but from then on the National League took over. Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder captured the MVP award after hitting a three run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The National League won the game 5-1 making it the second consecutive year the league has won home field advantage in the World Series.

LOCAL NEWS

After last weekend’s jazz festival, City Park will host another music event. The 91st Manhattan Municipal Band has played there throughout the summer playing several instrumental numbers including patriotic-themed music. Tonight’s event is free to the public and will feature several musical highlights from the band this summer starting at 7:30pm at the Larry Novell Band Shell.

A large mercury spill in Manhattan brought out the Manhattan Fire Department, the State Hazmat response team, and EPA officials Sunday. The spill involved one pound of mercury at the Beta Sigma Psi house at 1200 Centennial Drive. While the spill actually occurred a few weeks ago, Fire dept officials weren’t notified until Sunday. The EPA remains on the scene, and it is expected that the building will have to remain unoccupied for at least two weeks. While it’s not illegal to own mercury, it’s not been disclosed what the intention was of the person who had a five pound container of the substance, with the one pound spilling.

STATE NEWS

Gov. Sam Brownback heads to southwestern Kansas this week for a fresh look at conditions caused by persistent drought. Brownback toured the rain-deprived counties of Finney, Gray, Haskell and Meade in early May. On Wednesday he plans to visit Morton, Stevens and Seward counties, in the southwestern-most corner of the state. Nearly half of Kansas has been declared in a drought emergency because of extreme conditions for the past year.

A Kansas family returned from a fishing trip with more than mere fish to show for their outing. Lorraina Fortine was 39 weeks pregnant and scheduled for a C-section Monday. But her doctor told her she wouldn't go into labor before then, so the family headed Friday to Cheney Lake for the weekend to celebrate her 3-year-old's birthday. But her new baby wouldn't wait.
Fortine told KWCH-TV she woke up Saturday morning in labor, had a few small contractions, and gave birth - in her tent. The newborn girl is named Summer Fortine coming into the world weighing seven pounds, 13 ounces.

Alcohol was a likely factor in the death of a 14-year-old Northern California girl after she and three friends apparently drank vodka mixed with soda during a weekend sleepover, authorities said Monday. Paramedics found Takeimi Rao of Santa Rosa dead in her bedroom around 9 a.m. CBS News reports Sonoma County officials say an autopsy was performed on Monday they are now awaiting toxicology tests that could take up to two weeks.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Today, the EA Sports annual College Football game hits retail shelves. “NCAA Football 12” for X-box 360 and Playstation3 adds new features this year including an ability for users to work their way up a staff to a head coach position. With the 2010 conference realignments on mind, players can now move teams from conference to conference and even change the number of teams each has.

SPORTS

The father-son tandem of Yankee second baseman Robinson Cano and Jose Cano captured the Home Run Derby victory last night. Cano battled with Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in the final round squeezing out the derby by one home run. Out of the total eight hitters representatives from the American League hit 76 home runs compared to 19 from the National League. All Star festivities continue tonight at 6:30 with the All-Star game from Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ.

A University organization will take their knowledge of crops on the road this fall. K-State Research and Extension will host a crop production field day on Wednesday August 17th at Ottawa University’s East-Central Experiment Field. Several K-State presenters will discuss topics of crop production from Nutrient Management in Eastern Kansas Soils to Soil Pit Evaluation of Strip-Till. A Wamego man has died in an accident in Anderson County. 42-year-old Ronald Winterman died after his 2003 Acura MDX drove left of center on U.S. 169 and collided with a semi-truck. Winterman was northbound when the accident occurred last Wednesday. He was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled into an east ditch. The semi’s driver, 63-year-old Gerald Schneider of Hillsboro was taken to the Anderson County Hospital.

STATE NEWS

Four northwest Kansas post offices have been reviewed for possible closure. The state is currently reviewing 32 post offices, discussing possible closure in result of the declining amount of mail. A total of three post offices in Smith County and one post office in Ness County have been added to the list of possible closure. The Hays Daily News reports each of the station’s workload is less than two hours a day.

Two people from the southeast Kansas town of Cherryvale have died in a crash near the intersection of U.S. 169 and U.S. 400.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident happened late Saturday when the driver of a pickup truck failed to come to a halt at a stop sign before getting onto U.S. 169. The truck crashed into a car headed south on the highway, causing both vehicles to roll into a ditch.
The driver of the car, 41-year-old Cindy P. Blake, and her passenger, 46-year-old Jeffrey J. Blake, were killed.
The patrol says the truck's driver wasn't hurt.

When they say everything is bigger in Texas, they might right. CBS NEWS reports that a mother in Longview gave birth to 16-pound baby over the weekend. Previously she was diagnosed gestational diabetes, which doctors speculate may have been the cause for such a large infant. Along with weighing 16-pounds the baby was measured in length at two feet.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

For the second week in a row, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is a top the box office. Grossing nearly 50-million dollars over the weekend, the film has now received an estimated amount of 261-million dollars. The third installment of the Transformers series was released in the U.S. on Tuesday June 28th and is the first of trilogy to be show in 3D.

LOCAL NEWS

More than 125 students are spending their time conducting research at Kansas State this summer. Areas being researched include biology, ecology, physics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, and chemistry. Students from several programs are also participating in summers seminars, attending special networking events, and learning to apply for graduate school.

A Fort Riley soldier found dead on Tuesday has been identified. The body of 29-year-old Aaron Evilsizer of Junction City was found with a gunshot wound to the head that appeared to be self-inflicted. The Junction City Police report the cause of death has yet to be determined.

STATE NEWS

A Kansas judge has refused to dismiss a charge of aggravated indecent liberties against a former Lawrence church youth leader. Christopher Cormack had argued that prosecutors filed the charges after the state's five-year statute of limitations had expired. But Douglas County prosecutors contended they acted within the law because Cormack had spent four of those years out of the state. Cormack is a former youth ministry coordinator at Trinity Lutheran Church. He's accused of having an illegal sexual relationship with a girl beginning in 1999, when he was 28 and she was 15.

NATIONAL NEWS

President Obama proposed cuts to Social Security yesterday. CBS News reports that Obama hopes to reduce the deficit by as much as four trillion dollars over the next decade. The administration would only agree to cuts to Social Security benefits in exchange for reducing some eliminating some tax breaks that benefit the wealthy and certain industries, including oil and gas firms.


ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Dunder Mifflin Sabre has a new CEO named Robert California. The role portrayed by James Spader in the season seven finale of The Office will replace the former CEO of the company played by actress Cathy Bates. Bates will star in another role in her own NBC series called, “Harry’s Law”. NBC reports season eight of The Office will begin filming on July 25th.

SPORTS

Former Kansas State basketball player Jacob Pullen told an athletic department official this afternoon that he hasn’t signed a contract with a Turkish professional team. The Kansas City Star reports Media relations assistant Tom Gilbert said he spoke with Pullen, who said he hadn’t signed to play with Antalya, a Turkish Basketball League club. Eurobasket, an overseas professional basketball web site, reported earlier today that Pullen had signed with the team.

The Royals concluded their series with the Chicago White Sox last night, winning 4-1. Starting pitcher Bruce Chen pitched through six innings giving up only one run on four hits. Chen improves to 5-2 on the season tying colleague Luke Hochevar for the most wins on the staff. Kansas City comes home tonight to play the Detroit Tigers at 7:10pm.

LOCAL NEWS

Two local college graduate students are taking their talents overseas. Kyle Van Horn of Abilene and Christopher Lemon of Belpre have both received 2011 Fulbright U.S. student scholarships to study abroad. Each will head to Germany this fall to teach English as a second language. The Fulbright program aims to increase mutual understanding between the U.S. citizens and those of other countries. It was established under legislation introduce by the late Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright and is administered by the Institute of International Education.

Fort Riley officials have released an update involving a soldier found dead at approximately 5:30 Monday morning in his barracks room at the Warrior Transition Battalion.
21-year-old Specialist Nathan Conley, an M1 armor crewman, was assigned to the WTB in February. He deployed to Iraq from November 2010 to this past February in support of Operation New Dawn.

Conley’s death is under investigation, and officials have not yet released information on the cause of death.

STATE NEWS

A famous candy company is coming to Kansas. According to the Topeka Capital Journal, Mars Chocolate North America unveiled plans on Wednesday to build a $250 million manufacturing plant in the Kanza Fire Commerce Park south of Topeka. The construction process will begin in August, meanwhile the company hopes to start producing Snickers and M&Ms in late 2013.

NATIONAL NEWS

A homeless teenager in Florida loses possessions in a fire. 17-year-old Jonathan Davis and his family were living at the Vacation Lodge Hotel in Kissimmee due to the toll of his parents losing their jobs in the recession. CBS News says a fire recently burned the family’s temporary home to the ground, turning all the remaining possessions they had into ash. The Davis’ will now look for a new source of living in the area.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Two Hollywood celebrities are calling it quits. People Magazine reports Actors David Duchovny and Tea Leoni have separated. The couple were married for 14 years, including a period in 2008 where they separated and then reunited. Duchovny and Leonia have two children together ages 12 and 9.

SPORTS

Two former Wildcat athletes have been inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. Former Kansas State All-American linebacker Mark Simoneau and 2005 All-American Women’s basketball player Kendra Wecker were among the latest induction class. Others included former Jayhawks Raef Lafrentz and Dick Harp.

LOCAL NEWS

A K-STATE SENIOR WINS A NATIONAL AWARD

Civil Engineering major Rachel Spicer of Shawnee recently received the American Society of Civil Engineer’s Student Leadership Award. The award recognizes leaders in the organization’s student chapter and their involvements as an officer in various activities. The society itself has over 140,000 worldwide members as well as over 300 student chapters.

TRAGEDY STRIKES FT. RILEY

A Fort Riley Soldier was found dead in his barracks room on post Monday. According to the Associated Press, Fort Riley officials indicated late Monday identification of the Soldier is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. The incident is under investigation. A cause of death has not been announced.


STATE NEWS

Topeka police are investigating two overnight burglaries happening at two businesses in the southwest section of the town. The Topeka Capital Journal reports police say someone pried the doors open, but fled after the alarms sounded. Additional details remain to be released.

Dodge City as well as a few other southwest Kansas communities has voted to ban
fireworks due to an extreme heat wave and continued drought. Previously the city issued a waiver allowing fireworks July 2nd through 4th. The city’s public fireworks display is postponed until a future date.

NATIONAL NEWS

A computer hacker group plans to “cyberattack” several Orlando, Florida government-related websites. The ‘Anonymous’ hackers declare that the attack is a result of an incident in which Orlando police arrested members of a group feeding the homeless. CBS News reports federal agencies around the world have arrested several high-profile young people in response to the attacks.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

A CBS sitcom may kill off its main character. Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre wants to remove character Charlie Harper from the show, to make sure actor Charlie Sheen cannot return. According to sources close to the network, Harper will be killed off with the source of death yet to be determined. The show’s new season will not begin filming until August 5th.

SPORTS

The Kansas City Royals dropped game two of their road series with the Padres last night. After trailing 4-1 through six innings, right fielder Jeff Francoeur hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to help the Royals try to comeback. The comeback failed again in night number two at Petco Park as the Royals fell 4-2.

College baseball ended last night in Omaha, the South Carolina Gamecocks claimed their second national championship in a row over SEC conference foe, the Florida Gators, 5-2. South Carolina’s second baseman Scott Wingo was named MVP of the entire College World Series. The Gamecocks become the ninth team to repeat as champions in two consecutive years since the Oregon State Beavers did so in 2006 and 2007.

A FEW K-STATE STUDENTS HAVE CEMENTED THEIR FUTURE

Seniors in construction science and management, Derek Timler of Leawood, Klayton Wilk of Topeka, and Matthew Plummer of Westmoreland each received their Tilt-Up Concrete Technician Certification in May. Each was tested in an examination taken during the Spring 2011 finals week. Tilt-up construction is a construction technique that uses concrete panels that are tilted from horizontal to vertical position using a crane.

THE FIREWORK FRENZY IS ALMOST HERE

Manhattan Firework sales will begin Friday, July 1st at 12:00 p.m. and continue until July 4th at midnight. Fireworks cannot be discharged on city streets and throwing fireworks at people or vehicles is prohibited. A public fireworks display will be held on July 4th at Cico Park with free admission.

A Wichita man plead guilty to receiving child pornography from two 14-year-old girls. United States Attorneys say that he could be sent to federal prison for more than 21 years. The Associated Press reports, 26-year-old Shane McClelland says he began communicating with the two girls in early 2010 asking for and receiving photos of their breasts and genitalia through his email. McClelland will be sentenced on September 12th.

NATIONAL NEWS

An Indian woman is suing a major clothing retailer in California. Hani Khan formally worked in the stockroom at Abercrombie and Fitch, in federal court on Monday; CBS News reports that Khan believes she was illegally fired after refusing to remove her, hijab, a Muslim headscarf. Khan is now employed at Hollister, as for Abercrombie and Fitch, they replied to the situation stating that their company does not tolerate discrimination.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

One Hollywood actor took time out of his busy schedule yesterday to jam Alice Cooper. 48-year-old actor Johnny Depp started playing in bands well before his debut on the silver screen. According to E! , Depp says his friend Nicolas Cage suggested he try acting around 20 years ago. Depp joined Cooper on stage at London’s 100 Club performing songs “Schools Out” and “I’m Eighteen”.

SPORTS

The Royals started a three game interleague series on the road last night in San Diego. After trailing 4-1 through five innings, Kansas City attempted a comeback in the top of the sixth in they could only score two runs. The Royals dropped the game 4-3, giving pitcher Jeff Francis an All-time record of 5-13 against the Padres. Both teams go at it again tonight, first pitch at 9:10 CT.

HIGH GAS PRICES CONTINUE TO AFFECT BUSINESS

Associate Director of the Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship Chad Jackson says recent prices have created challenges for small businesses. Jackson adds that because of less personal income being spent on goods and services and more on fuel, small businesses are paying higher costs to acquire or manufacture goods. More than 3,000 students earned semester honors from K-State for their academic performance in the spring 2011 semester. The total is estimated to be near 13% of the school’s population. Recognized students were required to be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours of course work.

The Kansas Rules and Regulations Board has rescheduled their meeting on abortion for

Thursday. According to the Topeka Capital Journal, the state Department of Health and Environment needs the board's approval before it can impose the regulations it drafted for abortion providers under a new state law requiring a special licensing process for them. Both the law and the regulations are to take effect Friday.

NATIONAL NEWS

An accident in Pennsylvania leaves a school bus on the side of the road. The bus was transporting children to camp on Sunday afternoon when another vehicle over-corrected in front of it while passing, causing the bus to hit the guardrail and overturn on a rural Pennsylvania interstate. The accident injured nearly two-dozen people and closed the northbound highway lanes for hours.

TWO HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES TIE THE KNOT

British actors Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz reportedly got married recently, this according to the Associated Press. 43 year old Craig is known for his portrayal as James Bond in each of the most recent bond films, meanwhile 41 year old Weisz won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener”.

SPORTS

The Kansas City Royals closed the door on a series with the Chicago Cubs last night. The Royals got off to hot start scoring four runs in the first inning, while pitcher Luke Hochevar went 5 and 2/3 innings striking out five batters. Joakim Soria came into the game in the ninth and picked up the save, which gave the Royals a 6-3 victory. Kansas city heads to San Diego tonight for series opener with the Padres at 9:05pm.

LOCAL NEWS

A Faculty/Staff golf tournament is underway today.
The tournament is being played at Rolling Meadows golf course near Junction City. The event hosts current and retired university staff, visiting professors, graduate assistants, and other full-time employees. For more information on the tournament and others like it you can contact 532-6980.

The Riley County Fire Department responded to a fire near McDowell Creek on Wednesday. The fire started from a tree that had been struck by lightning on Monday and continued to burn 45 acres near the ranch of Frank and Jan Lyons, no injuries were reported.

STATE NEWS

A Topeka man was hospitalized this morning after being shot. According to the Topeka Capital Journal, the shooting took place at 3:30 this morning near central park. The 19 year old victim was taken to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center where it was determined his wounds were not life threatening.

NATIONAL NEWS

A large earthquake shook a large swath of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands last night. CBS News reports, in result, Alaska state officials issued a tsunami warning for some of the coastal areas. The warning was later cancel after being in affect for only an hour.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

An undercover cop was attacked by Bieber security. TMZ says during an autograph session at a New York City Macy’s Pop singer Justin Bieber became concerned when an man in street clothes rushed towards him so he had security grab him. Little did Bieber know that the man was an undercover policeman there to help with mob issues. No other conflicts occurred after the man identified himself.

SPORTS

As projected Kyrie Irving became a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers last night. Irving was the first overall pick coming before Arizona’s Derrick Williams who was selected second. A total of six Big 12 players were selected in the draft, but K-state’s Jacob Pullen was not one of them. Although undrafted, Pullen’s NBA hopes are not lost as he still has a chance to sign with any interested team as a free agent.

KSU TEAM USES SOLAR ENERGY FOR COMPETITION

The Solar Boat Club at the Salina campus headed to Iowa earlier this month. The club competed against 20 teams from all over the globe including Mexico and Turkey. The team finished sixth overall in the competition with top 10 finishes in the endurance and sprint events. MAN COMMITS BATTERY NEAR DOWNTOWN

A suspect committed an aggravated battery in the vicinity of the Manhattan Town Center mall Wednesday afternoon. Riley County Police department reported that 26-year-old James T. Moore of Manhattan reportedly hit or pushed a woman near the mall, attempted to flee and intentionally hit manager of the pathfinder, Dave Colburn before driving off. Moore’s vehicle was later found and he was tazed before being booked into custody.

WOMAN ROBS FOUR BANKS

The Associated Press reports a woman from Moundridge has been indicted of robbing the banks over a two-year span. 51-year-old Vicki Arci will has been held in the Harvey county jail for nearly two weeks on state charges. Arci robbed a bank in Newton on June 9th then later that day attempted to a McPherson bank before her arrest.

CONGRESS TALKS ABOUT MARIJUANA
CBS News reports, earlier this month congressman Ron Paul presented legislation to the house to limit the federal government’s role on cross-border smuggling. Paul says the bill is not an attempt to legalize pot, but instead clear up current conflicts.

POTTER AUTHOR SELLING ONLINE

J.K. Rowling refused for many years to sell e-books of the harry potter series. According to the Wall Street Journal, Rowling will launch an online store and social networking website known as “Pottermore”. The University and Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services have partnered together for nearly 15 years. Thanks to an $80,000 commitment from Chartwells, K-state announces the new Nancy Kassebaum Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to four freshman enrolled in any curriculum and demonstrate a commitment to public service and a strong desire to continue to work in the realm.

A NEW BUSINESS OPENS UP IN AGGIEVILLE TO THE SMELL OF ONIONS

Cozy Inn hamburgers had their grand opening yesterday on the eastern edge of Aggieville. Within the first hour of business many customers filed into the restaurant to get a taste of the newest food in Manhattan. Cozy Inn grills their burgers right in front of their customers then bags them up to go. The Manhattan location is now the third to open up in Kansas with the other two in Salina and Junction City.

A BODY WAS FOUND LAST NIGHT IN KIOWA COUNTY
Kansas Highway Patrol officials identified the victim as Ky Maggard of Haviland. The Topeka capital journal reports Maggard was killed after his pickup truck crashed on a gravel road a mile west of Haviland. Maggard was 14 years of age.

A FLOODED CITY IN THE NORTHERN U.S. TO EVACUATE

Thousands of citizens in Minot, North Dakota have until 6pm tonight to leave the town. According to the Associated Press, the Souris River near the city is projected to top the city’s levees within two days. Mayor Curt Zimbelman says crews are focusing efforts on building dikes to protect critical infrastructure such as the sewer system, water plants, schools and city hall.

According to Deadline Hollywood, actor Jon Hamm locked into an 8-figure deal for three years making him one of the highest paid cable actors. Hamm stars on the hit 1960s drama “Mad Men” as Don Draper, a talented advertisement executive. Hamm previously had only two years left on his contract.

According to two studies by Kansas State finance professor Eric Higgins, the best way to help the market is to stop delaying foreclosures. In one of his studies, Higgins says, it takes an average of 17 months for a foreclosure to happen and during that time, the home can be sitting, becoming run down and declining in value. CONVICTED WOMAN SENTENCED ON MONDAY

45 year old Diane Washam was sentenced to 15 years in prison without probation in Riley County Court yesterday. Washam killed her 88-year old mother in late August and had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

STORMS LAST NIGHT CAUSE INJURIES
State officials in Norton report a family of four received minor cuts and scrapes after a tornado in northwest Kansas destroyed their home near the Nebraska border. At least three tornadoes were spotted in Norton County last night tearing down tree limbs and power lines.

On Wednesday, President Obama will announce further plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan. CBS News reports the President’s plan will give the Afghani people control of their own security in 2014. After talking to unknown Pentagon officials, The LA Times says an estimated ten thousand service members will be withdrawn this year.

MTV STAR DIES IN ACCIDENT
Viva La Bam star Ryan Dunn passed away early Monday morning after his 2007 Porsche left the road and burst into flames. Dunn had posted pictures early in the night of he and some friends drinking, which leads many to believe the accident was a result of drunk driving. Dunn was 34 years old.

SPORTS

The Texas Longhorns have been eliminated from the College World Series. The Horns fell to the North Carolina Tarheels last night, 3-0. It was only the second time in school history that the team had been eliminated after playing only two games in the series. Their Big 12 rival, the Texas A&M Aggies face elimination tonight against the Cal Bears.

The Royals kick-off their homestand tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Luke Hochevar will take the mound against Arizona pitcher Joe Saunders. The two teams meet for the first time since 2009 when the D-backs took two out of three. First pitch tonight from Kauffman stadium is set for 7:10.

CAMPUS POLICE CALL A RECENT CAMPAIGN, A SUCCESS

From May 23rd to June 6th, University Police conducted a Click-It- Or-Ticket campaign on campus to raise awareness for traffic safety.

During the campaign, KSU Police reportedly wrote 217 safety belt citations, 18 speeding citations, and 73 others including driving with a suspended license and no proof of liability insurance. A total of 294 vehicle stops were made by the patrol division.

The campaign was supported by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.


AREA CITIZENS MAY HEAR LOUD NOISES WHILE OUTDOORS
THIS WEEK

The First Infantry Division of Fort Riley has issued a noise and training advisory until next Sunday, June 26th.

The division says the training will consist of explosions of 40-millimeter devices, low flying aircraft noises, and other loud artillery.

No roads near Fort Riley will be closed in result of the exercises.

LAST NIGHT’S WEATHER HAD SOME KANSANS TAKING COVER

National weather service spotters reported a tornado that touched down in Morris County near the town of Latimer moving northeast at about 15 miles per hour.

According to the Topeka Capital Journal, no damage was reported from the affected area.

Riley County as well as other local counties was
under a tornado watch until two o’clock this morning.

PEDOPHILE AUTHOR RECEIVES FINAL SENTENCE

CBS News reports that Phillip R. Greaves II, plead no contest last week to distributing obscene material depicting minors engaged in harmful conduct.

Greaves wrote a book titled “The Pedophile’s Guide
To Love and Pleasure” which led to his arrest in December.

Greaves received a two-year sentence of probation while on trial in Florida and will now go to his home in Colorado where he will not register as a sex offender.

A FORMER OSCAR-WINNER TURNS DOWN RETIREMENT RUMORS

74-year-old actor Morgan Freeman told the Washington Post over the weekend that his career is far from over and that he still has much more to contribute to the film industry.

Freeman adds that he will reprise his role as Lucius Fox in England later this month when filming the final film of the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy.

The Royals dropped their final game of the weekend against their in-state rival the St. Louis Cardinals.

The two teams were tied in the bottom of the ninth thanks to an Alcides Escobar home run in the top half, but it took a heroic walk-off home run by Cardinals second baseman Skip Schumaker who came in to pinch hit and finished off the Royals with a 5-4 win. The Royals have the night off tonight before taking on the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.


The 112th Annual U.S. Open concluded on Father’s Day. After leading each day of the tournament, Ireland’s Rory McIlroy hoisted the trophy on Sunday, becoming the youngest professional golfer to do so at 22 years of age.

McIlroy broke a ten-year old open record shooting an 16-under, which led the runner-up by 8 strokes in his first ever, PGA tour win.

A certification hearing for fourteen-year-old Cole Drake has been set for September 22nd and 23rd. 1350 KMAN reports County Attorney Barry Wilkerson is asking for drake to be tried as an adult in the murder of fourteen-year-old Tyler Dowling. Drake is being charged with first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.

A Manhattan therapist who stalked a Fort Riley soldier she was ruled mentally competent. Rachelle Santiago was working at the Irwin Army Community Hospital at Fort Riley. Santiago faces a five-count indictment of stalking, sexual battery, making a criminal threat, eluding a pursuing police vehicle and unlawfully entering a military installation.

A three-time Fulbright recipient and K-state professor Emizet Kisangani is going to Central Africa for eight months. The university released this information this morning stating Kisangani is K-state’s director of African studies and is researching the parliament and the banking sector on post-conflict reconstruction on the region. He wants to show the importance of parliament and a banking sector on post-conflict reconstruction because he feels that those two areas have been overlooked in the past.

Governor Sam Brownback is asking the U.S. Department of Agricutlture to declare a drought in 21 counties in western Kansas. According to KSNT, The declaration would make farmers eligible for loans from USDA’s farm service agency as well as other types of aid.
Dylan spencer and his wife Amy as well as their two children were laid to rest yesterday in holton. The Topeka Capital Journal writes Outside of the church…Holton residents held American flags in support of the couple and their two children. The residents outside were blocking members of Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church from interrupting the procedures.

For the first time in six years…measles was reported in Johnson County. According to the Associated Press, The Johnson County Health Department is investigating the report. The case was reported at Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park. It is being suggested that the student was not treated for the disease. Other students and staff that had also not been vaccinated for the disease were told to stay home. Ten people who had not been treated for the disease came in contact with the patient.

The Manhattan Mercury reports Governor Sam Brownback visited Kansas State students on Wednesday night and had a bit of advice for them. His wise words were for the students to build relationships. Brownback said it is a skill comes in handy later in life too. “I see a lack of relationships in this society” Brownback said Wednesday evening during a speech at the K-state Alumni Center.

According to the Manhattan Mercury, USD 383 will cut part of it’s school year short. However, this doesn’t mean teachers get to start their summer early they will still work the whole year and get paid the same. The school voted to take this action at a Wednesday night meeting of the school.

According to the Topeka Capital Journal, a youth age Al Ryon Jaquoin Perkins, age seventeen, is to be tried as an adult for the rape of a child aged five during what was a home invasion. The judge made the decision Thursday in Shawnee County district court. Topeka police officers were summoned about 3:45 am on November 9th to a report of a break in. Once the police were told the five year old had been the victim of a sexual crime. Of the five felonies Perkins was charged with three of them are level one offenses. These include rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated kidnapping. Thursday’s hearing was conducted behind closed doors because Perkins’ defense attorney objected to a reporter covering the proceeding.

KSNW reports texting driver blamed for slamming into police cruiser on Kellogg. Wichita police say a texting driver is to blame in a crash that happened on Kellogg Wednesday that heavily damaged a police cruiser. Police say an officer pulled 300 feet behind a motorist with a disabled vehicle in the traffic lane. It was then that a ford explorer slammed into the back of the patrol car witnesses said the driver made no attempt to stop. “The cause of the accident appears to be the driver was texting” said lt. Doug Nolte with the Wichita police. Thankfully no one was seriously injured in the crash and the driver accused of causing the crash was cited for careless driving.

K-state Junior Joshua Ericson mathematics major is trying to track and predict the spread of rural epidemics. Ericson is studying the town of Chanute to help him research for his project.

Ericson says “these outbreaks very often originate in rural settings, so our results will be able to be applied immediately to regions throughout Kansas and the Midwest."

The study has been going on since this past summer.

According to the Manhattan Mercury, when the Manhattan school board meets tonight, it will decide on whether it wants to cut the school year short. The board made the school year one day shorter last year.

According to WIBW, police in Junction City seized fifty-two pounds of narcotics during a normal traffic stop. The cops called in the k-9 unit after they became suspicious of the vehicle. The unit proceeded to find the stash of drugs that is worth two hundred and sixty thousand dollars in street value. Police then arrested the two men.

In state news…

According to KSNT, A Tyson plant in Emporia is cutting its workforce by sixty to eighty employees this week.

Tyson spokesman Gary Michelson said the cuts are due to improved efficiency at other plants.

Mickelson added that the released employees are being encouraged to apply to other Tyson plants.

The Tyson Emporia plant reduced its workforce in 2008 from twenty four hundred employees to one thousand employees

In national news…

According to USA Today, Three children are in stable condition after a school shooting in Houston. A six year old brought a loaded gun to the school. The gun then fired after the boy dropped the firearm on the floor. Thirty three year old Shawn Dixon said that the school should add metal detectors as an added security concern.

Spokesman for Houston public schools normal reminded parents that they should keep their firearms locked up and away from their children and to check through your child’s backpack before sending them off to school.

In entertainment news…

According to Yahoo Entertainment, The Black Eyed Peas are starting a music academy in New York City that will start this July. The academy will allow kids from the ages of thirteen to nineteen to work with professional level audio and video equipment.

In local news…

A teen has been arrested in the dowling homicide case. The Manhattan Mercury reports on Thursday police announced the arrest of Manhattan High School Freshman Cole Drake in connection with the discovery of the body of Tyler Dowling Wednesday evening. Dowling’s body was discovered in a field near Eisenhower middle school Wednesday night. The Riley County Police Department said the homicide happened just blocks from Dowling’s home. Drake was confined at the Geary County Juvenile Detention Facility last night. Police are continuing to investigate the case with Dowling’s autopsy is still pending.

On Saturday April 16th, The Wildcat 91.9 will host the first annual block party on Legore Lane. The charity event will benefit the International Rescue Committee with their work on the crisis in Japan and the Children's feeding program in Cebu, Philippines. The block party starts at noon and will go on until 10:45 pm.

In state news…

The Kansas City Star reports, a gate keeper in the University of Kansas ticket scandal has been sentenced to prison. The sentence is set for 57 months. Along with the sentence, Charlotte Faye Bluebaw and other defendents in the case have been ordered to pay $2.5 million in restitution to the university.

The University of Kansas warns female students of a man peeping in showers. The Topeka Capital Journal reports that a man snuck into dorms to watch women shower in three instances this week. The Public Safety office said he had entered at least one building by tailgating... The suspect is described to be White Male, 18-21 years old 6 foot 3 165 pounds, with short light brown hair. In all three instances the suspect was wearing a red shirt, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes.

Abc announced today that it will cancel it’s long-time running daytime dramas, “All My Children” and “One Life to Live". Each series has been on the network’s airwaves for nearly 43 years. The move has been made to transform the network’s daytime programming to a more informative approach. Abc added that All My Children’s final episode will air in September, while One life to Live will run until next January.

In Local News….

According to the Manhattan Mercury…Riley County Police Officers used tasers 17 times in 2010….and every time…the taser proved effective. Because of this…officers may be required to carry them. Currently…35 officers carry tasers.

As reported by the Associated Press…tuition for K-State students is expected to increase by 4 percent. In-State tuition would increase to two hundred and thirty one dollars while out-of-state tuition would increase to over six hundred and ten dollars. Around the country, other state universities are feeling the bind of tight state budgets. At the University of Arizona, tuition is expected to increase by 20 percent. Students at UCLA and other California institutions have protested the tuition hikes.

The Topeka Capitol-Journal reports….The Kansas Expocentre needs a sixty million dollar expansion. Shawnee county residents need to decide whether they want to foot the bill. The exhibition hall will increase by thirty thousand feet and a livestock pavilion will also be added. These two features are one just one of the many highlights of the expansion. Commision Chairman Vick Miller said that letting the expocentre deteriorate would have a negative effect on the economy. According to Miller, the expocentre currently generates tens of millions of dollars.

KCTV Five reports…..Former KU football star and current starting defensive back for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers Aqib Talib is a person of interest in a Garland Texas incident. Allegedley Tahlib hit Shannon Billings with a handgun. Tahlib then fired shots at Billings. Billings is the boyfriend of Talib’s sister. The police report says that incident happened after an argument between Talib’s sister and Billings. Billings was arrested after police discovered that he had two pending family violence offenses.

The Kansas City Star reports…Grandview High School was evacuated on Monday after someone made a bomb threat. Grandview is located in the Kansas City metro area. Police searched the entire school, but were unable to find a bomb.

According to the Associated Press….Singer and Actress Beyonce Knowles is searching for a manager. Her father and former manager Matthew Knowles decided to part ways after nearly 20 years. Matthew Knowles told the associated press that the split was mutual. Knowles also managed former Destinys Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Rowland and Knowles parted ways in 2009, while Williams gaves Knowles the axe just one year later. In a released statement, Beyonce said, "He is my father for life and I love my dad dearly. I am grateful for everything he has taught me.” It is still unclear on who Beyonce’s new manager will be.

Debate team wins national championship

According to a K-State media release...

Senior Beth Mendenhall, best known for her columns in the K-State Collegian, is quite the speaker as well. Mendenhall, along with junior Derek Ziegler won the 2011 Cross-Examination Debate Association's national tournament in Binghampton, N.Y.

This the team's third national championship since 1991.

Ziegler and Mendenall defeated a team from Towson University to claim the championship.

The senior racked up two more awards at the event.

Mendenhall was also named a All-American and Academic All-American.

Next up for Mendenhall and her teammates is a trip to American Forensic Association's National Debate Tournament. The tournament will take place from march 24-28 and will be held at the University of Texas-Dallas.
